Upcoming albums news.

Band of Horses put on what may be the best show I've ever seen at last year's Lollapalooza. I still get goosebumps whenever I think about it. The band's first two albums were equally as goosebump inducing. My copies of both Everything all the Time and Cease to Begin have had more than their fair share of spins on my turn table. The band's 3rd album Infinite Arms is set to be released on May 18th and we've had quite a few previews of the material. We've heard Laredo, Compliments, Factory and now BOH has released a video for Northwest Apt. Watch it over at Stereogum.

In other upcoming album news, Wolf Parade has released the cover art for Expo 86. I guess they didn't get sued over the title.

In even more new album news, Sleigh Bells whose debut album Treats is due May 11th have released a new track off the album entitled Tell Em'. The track starts off the album with a bang. Seriously, I'd consider backing away from your computer speakers. You can download the track from the band's website.

M.issing I.n A.ction, or not so much any more.

M.I.A is officially back and up to some serious business! Not only has she released a totally violent and NSFW video for her new song "Born Free", but she's also taken over Pitchfork Media's Twitter for the day. It's been quite intriguing thus far so I encourage you to check it out. Earlier (via Pitchfork's Twitter) M.I.A. released a screenshot featuring the track-list for her upcoming album (June 29th.) The list:

And if you think you can handle the video, here it is: http://www.miauk.com/

Also, The New Pornographer's new album "Together" is up for stream at NPR. The album features some pretty big deal contributors, including Zach Condon, Annie Clark AND Will Sheff! How's that for camaraderie!

In a bit of bizarre news, Grizzly Bear (!) has offered a snippet of a yet-to-be-named new track to Washington State's Lotto (?) for use in a new television spot. Entertainment Weekly has the commercial here:
http://music-mix.ew.com/2010/04/26/grizzly-bear-lottery-ad/, I really could care less about the commercial but the mere idea of new Grizzly Bear (!) music has me extraordinarily excited.

Who the F*** do you think you are?

Gorillaz. How dare you bring a "fake" band to the Colbert Report. Stephen is the real host of the show and couldn't possibly interview a "fake" band such as yourselves. Stephen is much too good for that. So the only solution was to have Albarn and Hewlett of said "fake" band be interviewed by a "Faux" Colbert. I'm pretty sure they were in on the joke but that didn't take away from it's hilarity. Watch the interview as well as an awesome performance of Stylo (with Bobby Womack), via COS:
http://consequenceofsound.net/2010/04/23/watch-gorillaz-played-by-humans-on-colbert/

It just gets better and better.

The National's new album High Violet is streaming over at The New York Times website! Trying to express how excited I am for this album's release would be futile. I'm head over heels in love with this band and the tracks that have been released thus far have been incredible. I would expect nothing less from these guys, you can hear the album for yourself now, and nab some mp3s from it below.
The National: Afraid of Everyone
The National: Bloodbuzz Ohio

Department of Eagles, (featuring Daniel Rossen of Grizzly Bear (!)) will be releasing Archive 2003-2006 on July 20th. The album will feature recordings that Rossen and his former college roommate Fred Nicolaus made prior to the release of their debut In Ear Park. You can hear a track from Archive entitled Brightest Minds here (via Pitchfork.)

In other new track news, M.I.A. released a new song from her upcoming yet-to-be-titled album. The track is entitled Born Free and it seems as if M.I.A. has had some serious punk injected into her. Hear it (via Def Pen Radio71.8) here.

More mp3 goodness.

It seems the music gods are bound and determined to keep me happy this week, despite the impending doom that is the end of the semester. I have had great luck in the mp3 department today and felt the need to share.
Good Old War have gifted their fans with a free download of their new single My Own Sinking Ship. If you've never heard of Good Old War, I highly suggest you take a listen. The band is comprised of former members of Days Away, and their first album Only Way to Be Alone is a gem. It's chock full of acoustic/folk/alt-country inspirations all alongside the band's signature harmonies. Luckily, the new song is in true Good Old War fashion and thus totally worth the e-mail address you have to relinquish for the download. The band's new album is being released on June 1st, which means I'll have to control my excitement for a couple more months.

Also, the good people over at Pop Tarts Suck Toasted have been rolling out reviews of Record Store Day material all week, and oh so generously providing mp3s along the way. Here's what they've offered up:
Phoenix: Fences (25 HRS a Day remix)
Passion Pit: Little Secrets (Felix Da Housecat Remix)
Happy Birthday: Alien
Surfer Blood: Take it Easy (ft. Marnie Stern)
Until next time friends. I'm off in search of more music, perhaps I shouldn't press my luck? (No Whammies, No Whammies, No Whammies!!!)

Bon Iver "Come Talk To Me" (Peter Gabriel cover)

I wasn't going to post anymore today but when I saw this I knew that I had to. I was lucky enough to grab my local record store's last copy of the Bon Iver/Peter Gabriel 7in on Record Store Day, but for those who weren't so lucky, the Bon Iver track has surfaced on Hype Machine:

There’s definitely more than this but these are the ones I’m most looking forward to, as in have the dates marked in 3 separate calendars. If you (like myself) are impatient and want to hear new material now, The Hold Steady, Broken Social Scene and LCD Soundsystem have all offered their albums up for stream. I posted the link to the LCD Soundsystem album earlier but I’ll post it again in case you missed it.

Finally, Blur (!) is back! The band released their first single in 7 years, entitled Fool’s Day via a special UK only 7in for Record Store Day. For those of us who don’t reside in the UK, the band gave the song up for free download on their website, just provide an e-mail address and the song is yours (it’s worth it). Updates/ things I've negelected to post in a timely manner.

I thought I’d provide a list of the shows I’ll be attending in the upcoming months so as to give you guys some idea of what to expect in the way of show reviews. I’ll also be finishing up my semester soon so posts will become more frequent. I plan to include more links to new mp3’s and videos as well as tour and album updates from the bands on my radar. So in that regard, here’s the list of shows I’ll be seeing:

5-4 Frightened Rabbit at The Opera House, Toronto, ON.

5-11 Local Natives at Beach Land Tavern, Cleveland, OH.

5-25 LCD Soundsystem at Koolhaus, Toronto, ON.

6-2 Broken Bells/The Morning Benders at The Queen Elizabeth Theater, Toronto, ON.

6-8 The National at Massey Hall, Toronto, ON.

6-19 Olympic Island Festival featuring: Pavement, Band of Horses, Beach House, & Broken Social Scene, Olympic Island, Toronto, ON.

6-20 Beach House at The Town Ballroom, Buffalo, NY.

7-22 The Flaming Lips at ArtPark, Lewiston, NY.

8-6th to 8th Lollapalooza in Grant Park, Chicago, IL.

It’s excessive I know, but totally worth it, and perhaps it explains my relative poverty at the moment!

Also, music stuff:

*LCD Soundsystem’s new album This is Happening is currently streaming here:

http://www.lcdsoundsystem.com/thisishappening/

That’s all I have for now. I’m off to listen to some of my Record Store Day goods!

Record Store Day 2010

So I promised a Record Store day preview, but you’re going to get a review instead. I posted the link to all that is being released today a while ago but here it is again in case you’re heading out later today:

http://www.recordstoreday.com/Page/836

Buffalo has a couple record stores worth noting, but I only hit one, mostly because I managed to find pretty much everything I was looking for. I had to budget myself more so than usual this year since my income as of late has been less than desirable (I am a poor college kid after all.) That being said I was still able to come home with a considerable haul, so here’s what I picked up:

Modest Mouse: The Moon and Antarctica vinyl reissue

LCD Soundsystem: Pow Pow single

The Flaming Lips and Stardeath and White Dwarves: The Dark Side of the Moon on Seafoam green vinyl!

Beach House: Zebra single, with special UK edit, remix version of 10 Mile Stereo and 2 new tracks.

Bon Iver/Peter Gabriel: Flume/Come Talk to Me 7in

& Beach House’s Devotion on vinyl (not a Record Store Day exclusive but I had to have it!)

So there you have it, I also entered a raffle to win my city’s only copy of The Hold Steady’s special vinyl release of Heaven is Whenever, I doubt I’ll win but I had to try. I highly suggest you guys hit a local record store today and participate. Physical media is a dying art and local shops need as much support as they can get. Personally, I prefer vinyl over mp3’s 100%, but if mp3’s are more your thing go and buy some CD’s (I know it sounds so 90’s.) Not only will you be supporting small businesses that are forced to compete with online retailers as well as corporations, but you’ll be supporting the artists you love as well which makes it doubly worth it.

Tallest Man on Earth at The Ninth Ward, Buffalo, NY, 4-14-10.

The Ninth Ward is the acoustic space located below The Church at Asbury Hall. I have to say; Asbury is probably my favorite venue in Buffalo. I saw Iron & Wine there with Blitzen Trapper as well as Andrew Bird and St. Vincent. The church is majestic, beautiful, and as much a part of the music played there as the band is. This was my first time in the acoustic space and I think it suited the circumstances wonderfully. The Tallest Man on Earth is the moniker of Kristian Matsson, a Swedish folk singer whose unadulterated acoustic guitar and gravely yelp are truly refreshing. Matsson’s first Tallest Man album “Shallow Grave” sounds as if it was recorded live, complete with background noises and guitar thumps. The album is full of adept finger picking, banjo, muddled fairy tale lyrics and simple, honest melody. “The Wild Hunt”, the newest Tallest Man full length was released the day of his Buffalo show, so I picked up my vinyl copy on my way out. Matsson’s newest effort is perhaps even more endearing than “Shallow Grave.” The wild finger plucking, signature bark and unadorned nature are still present, but the lyrics are much less abstract. Matsson also seems to have found his stride as a vocalist, soaring through songs with confidence and the occasional charming croaky hiccup. As per the show, Matsson was a thrill to watch. The set-list featured a lot of new songs as well as some “Shallow Grave” favorites peppered throughout. At the time of the show I had only heard two songs off of “The Wild Hunt”, “The King of Spain” and “Burden of Tomorrow,” but having listened to the album since I recognize a lot more. Matsson’s presence is undeniable. He plays his guitar wildly, stomping his feet as if to add percussion to his melodies. The dexterity in his playing is incomprehensible, yet never showy and his distinct howl is impossibly charming. His interaction with the audience was endearing as well. Matsson interjected with thoughts on audience conversations, his Gene Kelly style stomping and the audience’s reaction to his red electric guitar (“Oh no, what could I possibly do with this?”) Matsson enjoined us with a 3-song encore, during which he played a new song and profusely thanked the audience for allowing him to do so. The song was beautiful of course, and of course warranted no apologies or exceptions. “The Wild Hunt” is out now via Dead Oceans and I highly recommend it, in fact it’s spinning away on my turntable at this very moment.

Surfer Blood at Big Orbit’s Soundlab, Buffalo NY, 4-13-10

If you would have looked at my turntable any time from January of this year until about March you probably would have seen Surfer Blood’s Astro Coast spinning under its needle. The album is infectious, melodic, soaked in reverb and power cords and undoubtedly influenced by the likes of Pavement and Built to Spill. Singer John Paul Pitts presents an Issac Brock like howl and the occasional “Oh Oh Oh!” yelp, further compounding the band’s classic “indie” vibe. The guitars bounce much in the way of Dinosaur jr., creating a perfect platform for Pitt’s springy, some times James Mercer esque vocals. Despite all the references and obvious influences, Surfer Blood seems to be its own species. The fact that so many influences can be combined in a way that never sounds redundant or chaotic is truly remarkable. The band first made waves (pun intended) with their single “Swim” in 2009 and after waiting painfully long for their debut, Astro Coast proved to be worth the wait. That being said, I was thrilled to hear that Surfer Blood would be playing one of my favorite venues in Buffalo. Big Orbit’s is small and sparse but the vibe is perfect. It kind of reminds me of hanging out in a friend’s basement. The members of Surfer Blood added to the basement vibe by watching the opening act (Turbo Fruits) alongside the crowd. Something about seeing band members interact so readily with fans gives me the warm and fuzzies. Once Surfer Blood took the stage, I made the mental note that I’m sure just about everyone who sees this band live will make. The band is young. I’m not too sure how young exactly but let’s just say if I were a bartender I would be seriously suspicious of their ID’s. Their age however, had no effect on their stage presence or sound. All 5 members seemed comfortable and at ease. The band played pretty much everything off of their debut along with a Nirvana cover and a pretty incredible encore. After finishing off the first part of their set with “Catholic Pagans”, the band returned for the first of two encores. The encores contained “Neighbors Riffs”, a new song and an incredible jam in which all the members of both Surfer Blood and Turbo Fruits were on the stage playing at once. As if that wasn’t enough insanity, Surfer Blood’s tour manager joined Pitts and drummer Tyler Schwarz in an impromptu cover of Best Coast’s “When I’m With You.” There was also the suggestion of Weezer karaoke and LOST references, perfect.

Girls at The Phoenix Concert Theater in Toronto, 4-9-10.

I owe a lot to Toronto. The fact that I live in close proximity (two hours) from a city that seems to have a spot on almost every tour really bodes well for my ears (and eyes.) I’ve been bouncing back and forth from Toronto to Buffalo so often lately I’m afraid the border guards may become suspicious and deny me entry. They haven’t, as of yet, thus I was able to catch another great show this Friday. I’ll just add here that as a venue, I really like The Phoenix. It’s spacious enough to house anthem bands like Wolf Parade and quaint enough not to drain the life out of a band like Girls. Now, I did have the added bonus of being front and center for this one, which I think is really important in this case. On occasion the band offers up a danceable beachy vibe, but the most endearing thing about Girls is Christopher Owen’s heart-wrenching lyrics, and often, larger venues don’t do that sort of thing any justice. It’s hard to imagine lines like “sometimes you’ve just gotta make it for yourself, sometimes baby, you just need someone else” or “and I don’t want to cry my whole life through, I want to do some laughing too, so come on, come on, come on, come on, laugh with me” bouncing off of walls and pushing through crowds. It just seems wrong to force something so intimate to be something it’s not. Both the aforementioned lines are from the song “Hellhole Rat Race”, and the band’s Friday night rendition may have been my favorite part of the show. Despite the fact that the song could very easily fall prey to crowd sing-along (which would be awesome, if one were at a Hold Steady show) the Phoenix was hushed and Owen and crew were allowed to do the song justice. The rest of the set-list pretty much entailed most of the bands only album (Album), a couple non-album tracks including the recently released “Life in San Francisco”, and an insanely awesome closing cover of The Everly Brothers “All I have to do is dream.” The band was much more vocal than I had heard they could be, and seemed to be enjoying the crowd, although I don’t think they’ll be changing the band’s name to “Mother-Fucking Girls” as per one fans suggestion any time soon.

Other things:

I will be attending two more shows next week so I’ll have those reviews eventually, as well as the preview of Record Store Day I promised. Music wise a new LCD Soundsystem track surfaced today, you can hear it over at Consequence of Sound:
http://consequenceofsound.net/2010/04/11/check-out-lcd-soundsystem-change/

The song is from the upcoming “This is Happening” and features a marked change in James Murphy’s usual quippy dance-beat direction. If the rest of the album follows suit with this track I’m sure to be a fan. I’ll be seeing LCD in Toronto (of course) in May, after the albums release so I’ll be able to see how the new stuff plays live. Until then I’ll just have to wait anxiously for anything else Murphy decides to offer.

I’m planning a ‘what I’ve been listening to” post for tomorrow but since I’m currently entering academic hell week I’m not making any promises!

Wolf Parade at The Phoenix Concert Theater in Toronto, 4-7-10

My brother and I braved the QEW once again on Wednesday, this time to see the resurfacing Wolf Parade. As I said in an earlier post, I’ve never seen these guys before so I was extraordinarily excited. The band has two (incredible) albums worth of released material to pull from as well as a whole bunch of new stuff to debut. Despite being separated from one another for a bit (and working on other projects), the band’s chemistry was intact. I’m always a bit apprehensive about seeing bands whose core members are involved in other acts. Perhaps it’s an unfounded accusation, but I’m always worried that band relationships may suffer from external progression. In Wolf Parade’s case, both it’s singers have ventured out to form other bands and projects. Spencer Krug has recorded albums as both Sunset Runbdown and Moon Face, while Dan Boeckner co-leads Handsome Furs. Luckily, my hypothesis was proved false and Krug and Boeckner shared their vocal duties both flawlessly and with enthusiasm. Perhaps the most charming moment came when Krug called his mother whilst on stage and joined the audience in a rousing rendition of “Happy Birthday” dedicated to her. Since the band is releasing a new album, entitled Expo 86 this summer; we were treated to a lot of new material, for which the band (unnecessarily) apologized profusely. I’m not entirely sure of the names of the new songs, but they all sounded amazing. The crowd ate up every last bit of what the band put forth, new or old. The songs weren’t all new of course, the set-list was peppered with Wolf classics like I’ll believe in anything, This heart’s on fire, and the anthemic Kissing the beehive. The band even provided us with an entirely old song encore as a reward for our enthusiasm over their new stuff. As for the mechanics of the show, the band sounded damn near flawless. Wolf Parade’s multi-instrumental, multi-vocalist and, well, multi-everything approach could easily correlate to poor live sound. Fortunately, this is entirely not the case. During the show Krug quipped that someone had once charged the band with having songs that contained “too many notes”, and proceeded to dedicate one of their multi-everything tunes to said pessimist. Wolf Parade’s “kitchen-sink” approach to music making never feels too full or sprawling. Either the members of the band have a natural gift for connecting sound, instrument and voice or they are a bunch of really good editors. I would be willing to suppose the former. The new songs are no exception to Wolf Parade’s tradition, they did seemed a bit more on the Apologies to the Queen Mary spectrum to me, but we’ll have to wait for Expo’s release to be sure. You can check out one of the new songs in a fan-recorded video here:

Week in PRE-view

This week is shaping up to be rather spectacular music wise, as is next week but I’ll stick to this one for now. If you’re a fan of Lollapalooza, or are looking for something to do in August, the official lineup is being released tomorrow. Until then you can keep playing their version of “Wheel of Fortune” here:

http://2010.lollapalooza.com/

In other news I will be traveling to Toronto for two shows this week, the first of which is Wolf Parade on Wednesday. Needless to say I’m really looking forward to this show. I wasn’t able to catch these guys when they were touring around Apologies to the Queen Mary or At Mount Zoomer, though not for lack of regional opportunity (damn you Political Science night class!) Anyway, Wolf Parade is touring with new material from their upcoming album entitled Expo 86 (as long as they don’t get sued, as per Dan Boeckner.) The album doesn’t have a specific due date but it’s coming sometime this summer. Boeckner talked it up with Pitchfork and it sounds to me like it’s a return to Queen Mary-style anthems, but you can decide for yourself what’s to come here: http://pitchfork.com/news/38371-wolf-parade-announce-third-album-iexpo-86i/

Of course I will have a full re-cap of the show (with We are Wolves!) after the fact.

And because I have no qualms with driving abnormally long distances twice in one week, I’ll be heading back to Canada for the Girls show on Friday. As is agreed upon by most of the music-loving world, Girl’s Album is phenomenal. It definitely places in my top ten of the year and I have been longing to see them since it’s release (shout out to my brother who loves them perhaps even more than I do.) As much as I love their Album some of my favorite Girls stuff comes from the live acoustic set they did for KDHX, which includes four non-album tracks that are well, simply incredible. Here’s the link to that:

http://kdhx.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=11573&Itemid=352

As I said, next week is looking rather packed as well, Surfer Blood and The Tallest Man on Earth are playing Buffalo back to back so you can bet I’ll be at both. Of course it would be daft of me not to mention that next week also includes the glorious Record Store Day, but all of these things will get their own posts in good time. In case you need to prepare (i.e. empty you bank account) in advance, you can check out what’s being released here: http://www.recordstoreday.com/Page/836

That’s all I have for now kiddies. If more news of the musical persuasion arises it will be here as fast as I can regain my breath and type it up!

Can I buy a vowel Pat?

So the gang over at Lollapalooza has decided to tease us this year with a word puzzle of sorts. It's all very Pat Sajack. The "O"s "R"s and "I"s have all been filled in, and if you follow the 2010 lineup rumors (in other words if you have no life, like myself) it's pretty easy to fill in. But if puzzles aren't your thing, or if you do in fact have a life, most of the work has been done by the good folks over at COS:

http://consequenceofsound.net/2010/04/02/guess-lollapaloozas-2010-lineup-day-3/

Looks like I'm headed back to Chicago this August. (GRIZZLY BEAR!)

New Hold Steady!

I love the Hold Steady. My brother hates them, but that’s besides the point. They’ve released a couple tracks off of their new album Heaven in Whenever (5-4), and this is the newest one:

"The Weekenders" http://buzzworthy.mtv.com/2010/04/02/exclusive-listen-the-hold-steadys-the-weekenders/.

Sounds like standard Hold Steady to me, which is awesome since I got a little concerned (and despondent) when Franz Nicolay left the band.

Christine, Ect.

This is (going to be?) my humble little music blog. I don't dare compare to the masters, and I certainly would never claim to be omniscient. I only know that I love music. I love to talk about it, write about it, see it, and hear it. It makes me happier than sanity should allow. I know how much enjoyment I get out of reading music blogs, and hope that someone can find that feeling here amongst my thoughts and words. I want others to see what I see, hear what I hear, and feel what I feel. I see this as a forum for me to discuss not only what I’m listening to, but also shows that I’ve seen and what I’m looking forward to (music wise of course.) I’m currently on a mission to see as many shows as my geographic location will allow, before I (hopefully) flee the country for academic experiences elsewhere. That being said, this blog will contain a lot of show reviews, and I promise to do my best in regards to set-lists. However, I do tend to get caught up in the moment and as a result my normal diligence has been known to fail me. As of today,it is only 5 days until my next show (Wolf Parade at The Phoenix Concert Theater in Toronto) so expect information from that once my brain stops reeling and I can refocus. I do have some past shows to review (4 in the past month) so those may appear on here as well. I also hope to be able to provide mp3s or links to mp3s but since my legalese is rather poor and being sued is not on my bucket list, it may take me a while to figure that all out. I also hope to post videos and other good stuff as well but my technological skills are as good as my legalese so I’m not making any promises. Now that that is out of the way, let’s talk music shall we.

Currently loving: Bear Hands

Song of the day: “Walkabout”- Atlas Sound featuring Noah Lennox (I recently saw the Spoon/Deerhunter show is Toronto and have been in a Bradford Cox kind of mood ever since)

Next show: 4-7 Wolf Parade, We are Wolves Phoenix Concert Theater, Toronto On
